Genetic Analysis of Agronomic and Fall Armyworm-Resistance Traits in Maize Hybrids with Varying Levels of Resistance to Stem Borers

چکیده
Stem borer (SB) and more recently, fall armyworm (FAW) are serious economic pests in maize production sub-Saharan Africa. It is hypothesized that SB-resistant germplasm may confer resistance against FAW. However, the performance of lines hybrid combinations inheritance FAW-resistant traits under variable FAW infestations have not been reported. This study was conducted to (i) obtain information on agronomic infestations; (ii) identify hybrids combining high grain yield (GYLD) stability (iii) determine effects damage GYLD. Three (1393, CKSBL10060 CML 331) as testers six open-pollinated varieties (OPVs) were crossed a line tester scheme generate eighteen test crosses. The crosses together with two × checks evaluated artificial infestation (AI), natural (NI) pesticide-protected condition (PC) Nigeria. Additive non-additive significant for GYLD, most AI NI, except ear (EDAM) scores whereas only effect GYLD PC. Two (1393 CKSBL10060) combined positive GCA desirable 331 negative undesirable conditions. OPVs (AWR SYN-W2, AMATZBR-WC4 TZB-SR) had significantly either leaf (LDAM) or EDAM score AI. LDAM reduced but NI. (AMATZBR-WC4 x CKSBL10060, TZB-SR TZBR Comp 1-WC2 1393) tolerance across conditions thus recommended further testing.

Prospecting of popcorn hybrids for resistance to fall armyworm.
The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is the pest that causes the greatest economic losses for both common corn and popcorn crops, and the use of resistant plant genotypes is an important tool for integrated pest management. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the damage caused by S. frugiperda on single-cross popcorn hybrids under field conditions with natural infestation as well...
متن کاملGenetic Diversity Analysis of Maize Hybrids Through Morphological Traits and Simple Sequence Repeat Markers
Comparing different methods of estimating the genetic diversity could define their usefulness in plant breeding programs. In this study, a total of 18 morphological traits and 20 simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci were used to study the morphological and genetic diversity among 20 maize hybrids selected from different countries, and to classify the hybrids into groups based on molecular profiles...
متن کاملGenetic basis of resistance to fall armyworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and southwestern corn borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) leaf-feeding damage in maize.
Leaf-feeding damage by first generation larvae of fall armyworm, Spodopter frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella Dyar (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), cause major economic losses each year in maize, Zea mays L. A previous study identified quantitative trait loci (QTL) contributing to reduced leaf-feeding damage by these insects in the mai...
متن کاملGenome Wide Association Study for Drought, Aflatoxin Resistance, and Important Agronomic Traits of Maize Hybrids in the Sub-Tropics
The primary maize (Zea mays L.) production areas are in temperate regions throughout the world and this is where most maize breeding is focused. Important but lower yielding maize growing regions such as the sub-tropics experience unique challenges, the greatest of which are drought stress and aflatoxin contamination. Here we used a diversity panel consisting of 346 maize inbred lines originati...
متن کاملFall Armyworm (lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Resistance in Texas Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, and Their Hybrids ( Poa Spp.)
The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a destructive pest of many species of both C3 and C4 (cooland warm-season) turfgrass. No-choice experiments were conducted to evaluate 13 turfgrass genotypes of various Poa spp. for susceptibility or resistance to the fall armyworm. All 13 genotypes, including 8 Texas bluegrass ( Poa arachnifera Torr.), 2 Kentuck...
